A not so German Food Experience

As I have been trying to when traveling, especially to a new country, I signed up for a food tour in Germany. I had researched Sharing Plate on Viator and was not disappointed. I made the reservation for the afternoon of the first day. This way, the temptation to go to bed would be easier to fight.  

The guide, Mariya, was charming with the patience of a saint. She spoke English well and managed all of us, often switching back and forth between English and German. In all, there were about fifteen of us altogether. The group was a mix of a few tourists but mostly locals. They were all fantastic, and those who spoke English helped our guide make sure those who did not speak German understood what was happening.  

The tour included a variety of international restaurants located around Frankfurt. There would be four stops comprised of different genres of food. The tour was about 3-4 hours long. We started in a Middle Eastern restaurant that specialized in beef, including hot rock beef strips, and also had vegetarian dishes upon request. Everyone agreed that the food was delicious. We then went on a very needed walk by the river Main, through a lovely park with ducks and “the only two palm trees in Frankfurt.”  

Our next stop was an Italian restaurant, Longobardi’s. We were there for a particular sweet dish I did not find on the online menu. They explained that the restaurant owner was one of the founders of the Sharing Plate and that this was a dish she had developed. The best description is that it was a deconstructed German pancake with various toppings, fruit, chocolates, and candy. We then went to a Vietnamese restaurant where we tried several tasty dishes and finished the evening at a pizzeria. The pizza was very thin-crusted, very similar to those I eat when I am in Italy.  

We took several photos at the end of the evening. The night would have been exhausting even if I had not only just stepped off the plane a few hours earlier. The food was delicious, the locations were diverse, and the people were warm and welcoming. This was another successful “experience.”
